Why WordPress?

Quite a while ago we refined our core service offering, from building standard PHP websites to adopting solely a single CMS, and settled quite simply with WordPress.  WordPress is one of a number of open source developed software available under the GPL (General Public Licence), which is built by the community and for the community.

The current statistics on WordPress are that 17% of the entire internet sites are built in WordPress – quite impressive!

As a business, we were looking for robust software that not only could support customer’s managing their own content, but as developers, was flexible enough for us to develop our own plugins to enable us to supply our customers with the functionality required to make their websites work.

Not only was WordPress ticking all these boxes, it also has the added inbuilt facility for a blog, which has become an important aspect of SEO, as well as being the most popular form of sharing knowledge and expertise within the field of the social media websites.

Popularity/Community – There is a growing community of WordPress users around the country, and the great part about this is that we are all able to collaborate and support each other.  We even arrange to get together once a year at WordCamp to network, discuss and share projects and problems.

Structure/Architecture – Solid, robust software that enables you to connect with the community.

Flexibililty – Enables us to implement our own bespoke designs, and develop our own plugins for added functionality.

Management – We can manage our customers websites on their behalf, or hand the site over to our clients to manage themselves.  Every customer has different requirements, and this works all ways around.

Ease of Use – With a WYSIWYG editor, it keeps it simple and straightforward.

Resources – WordPress has well written documentation to help any developer or newbie learn and understand it’s processes.  This is invaluable for developers who require supporting documentation to further develop this software.

WordPress – A Little History (…straight from WordPress.org)

WordPress was born out of a desire for an elegant, well-architectured personal publishing system built on PHP and MySQL and licensed under the GPLv2 (or later). It is the official successor of b2/cafelog. WordPress is fresh software, but its roots and development go back to 2001. It is a mature and stable product. We hope by focusing on user experience and web standards we can create a tool different from anything else out there.
